Gap Insurance - For a vehicle lease or finance, insurance that covers any "gap" between the amount the lessees/buyer's insurance company will pay to the lessee/buyer if the leased vehicle is stolen or destroyed. Also means the aggregate remaining amount the lessee/buyer owes at that time to the finance company.
Gas/Electric Hybrid Engine - A powertrain that combines an electric motor and a gasoline or diesel internal combustion engine.
Gasoline Engine - An internal combustion engine that burns conventional gasoline.
Gauges - Digital and/or analog displays used to convey to the driver information such as dynamic engine parameters, operating conditions, RPM, speed and water temperature. Also referred to as instrumentation.
Goat - A Pontiac GTO. The name GOAT was conceived when the letter "A" was added to the letters G-T-O to form a word from the GTO abbreviation. GTO fans coined it to have a single-sylable word instead of the three-sylable "GTO" when they speak about their cars anf GOAT stuck.
Goutte d′Eau - A ′tear drop′ body style, tapered to the rear.
Governor - A device used with the carburetor to restrict maximum engine speed.
Gran Turismo (GT) - An Italian term, commonly used by US manufacturers, meaning ′grand touring′.
Gran Turismo Omologato (GTO) - Italian for Grand Touring Homologated. The name was originally applied to the famed 1962 Ferrari 250 GTO, and noted that enough of the vehicles had been built for FIA-sanctioned GT racing. The term was later used by Pontiac for the vehicle that launched the American muscle car phenomenon.
Greenhouse - The portion of a vehicle above its beltline.
Greenhouse Gas Score - A score from zero to 10 given by the EPA to each new vehicle by that represents the amount of greenhouse gases emitted during a laboratory driving simulation of the vehicle.
Greenhouse Gases - Gases produced by vehicles that use hydrocarbons as fuel (such as carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, methane, nitrous oxide and hydroflourocarbons) that contribute to reducing the loss of atmospheric heat into space.
Gross Vehicle Weight Rating (GVWR) - The sum of a vehicles curb weight, cargo weight capacity and passenger weight capacity.
Ground Clearance - The distance between the lowest point of a vehicle and level ground.
Ground-Up Restoration - Essentially the same as a frame-off restoration.
Gullwing Doors - Gullwing doors are hinged to open vertically rather than horizontally.
Gyro Sensor - A device that enables a vehicles navigation system to determine the direction the vehicle is facing.
