UNDERSTANDING AND DECODING THE VIN:

The VIN configuration of the Corvette changed in 1965 to 13 characters. The basic information was still shown including year, body style and order in the production sequence. The 3rd digit now signified a V8 engine, but not which one. Later in 1972 the engine digit would become more informative and specify size and horsepower rating.

The VIN for 1965-1967 could be found on the instrument support brace below the glove box. In 1968 the VIN moved to the top of the instrument panel where it was visible through the windshield from the outside. From this point forward, it stayed there and/or on the windshield support bracket also known as the A-pillar.

How to Decode a VIN Plate:

First Character: Make/Manufacturer

1 - Chevrolet

Second Character: Model

9 - Corvette

Third Character: Engine

4 - V8 (all engines)

Fourth and Fifth Characters: Body Style

37 - Coupe

67 - Convertible

Sixth Character: Model Year

5 - 1965

6 - 1966

7 - 1967

8 - 1968

9 - 1969

0 - 1970

1 - 1971

Seventh Character: Assembly Plant

S - St. Louis

Eight through Thirteenth Characters: Production Sequence Number

In 1968, the VIN sequence used for the vehicles produced was 194378S400001 - 194378S428566.

Note: For convertibles, the 4th digit is a 6.

EXAMPLE - To the left is an example of how a 1968 Corvette VIN might read. A VIN of 194378S412214 would indicate the following:

A Chevrolet Corvette with a V8 Engine, a Coupe model built in 1968 at the St Louis Plant with a production sequence number of 412214.
