UNDERSTANDING AND DECODING THE TRIM TAG:

The trim tag (aka: Data Plate) was riveted to the top of the cowl on the left hand side.  The codes you see on the trim tag:
  1) Model Year, Division Series, Body Style and Assembly Plant can be found in the VIN section
  2) Unit Number: Reminder that this is the sequence for the fisher body and not the same as
the sequence from the assembly plant.
  3) Trim information can be found in the Interior Codes Section
  4) Lower and upper body paint codes can be found in the paint codes section

Special Note: There has been lots of discussion about an "L" appearing on some of the trim tags coming out of the Baltimore and Kansas City plants.  Speculation has indicated this may be a designation of an "SS" car.  However, I have never seen any documented proof that this is true.  Based on our knowledge, there is no way to determine from the VIN or Trim Tag of a 1970 model if the car was an SS.  You will need a build sheet, original invoice or authentic window sticker to validate the SS car.  Beware of phoney documents - there are more "SS" cars on the road than were actually built.
