WHAT IS A PROTECT-O-PLATE (P-O-P):

The P-O-P was designed to be used by Chevrolet dealers to identify the original owner/purchaser and the purchased vehicle.  The POP would contain the owner's name, address and the vehicle's delivery date.  This information was embossed on special tape that was affixed to the plate.

When warranty service was performed on a customer's car the P-O-P was stamped on the work order.  The P-O-P was glued to the inside rear cover of the "Chevrolet 1970 Owner Protection Plan and New Vehicle Warranty" booklet.

The P-O-P was never meant to be used as documentation and was normally discarded when the vehicle went out of warranty or when the car was sold since warranties at that time did not transfer to the new owner.  But with today's collecible market, the P-O-P has become a very sought after piece of documentation and authentication used by automative entusiasts today.  It is one of the best forms of documentation you can have today as it identifies the following:

  1) the VIN
  2) the correct engine ID code
  3) the correct transmission number and date
  4) the rear end gear ratio and date
  5) it also included some options (i.e., Power Steering, Brakes, etc)

As I noted in the trim tag section, beware of reproduction or fake P-O-Ps.  Many recreate the
P-O-Ps for shows, etc, but many also secure these documents as a way of trying to sell a non-Authentic SS car.  Buyer Beware and do your homework when considering a purchase.
